In tenth grade I moved to New Zealand and took my first geography course. It helped to explain so much about the different places I had visited and the things I had observed. When I returned to Connecticut to complete twelfth grade I knew I wanted to spend my life studying the world in some way. After I went to college, my parents moved again, this time to Japan. I spent my summer vacations in Tokyo. Each summer I had a slightly different job: doing volunteer work, teaching English to Japanese executives, modeling, and running a summer day camp.
I majored in geography at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, received a MAT in geography from the University of Chicago, and completed a PhD at Texas A&M after teaching geography and social studies in rural, suburban, and urban school districts in Illinois and Texas.
My special interests are geographic education, human geography, curriculum development, and how individuals learn to think geographically.
The other Dr. Bednarz (see above) and I used to share our home with two border terriers. Alas, they went where all good dogs go. Now we have another border terrier Badger. We live in College Station. For fun I jog (although that isn't really fun), read, knit and needlepoint, and watch videos and tv. Of course traveling is one of my favorite activities. In the last couple of years I have made trips to Korea, England, Japan, South Africa, the Netherlands, and Lebanon; next summer I am taking educators to present at a conference in Scotland.
