Heyman to Present at National Congress on Icthyology

Heyman has been involved in helping to create marine protected areas in Belize since 1994. Working under the Nature Conservancy, Heyman collaborated with local fishermen and other stakeholders to understand that Gladden Spit, a reef off the coast of southern Belize, hosted multispecies spawning aggregations (SPAGs) that were a major draw for whale sharks to feed.

Wilheit Honored with Verner E. Suomi Award

The award is given in the form of a medallion and was created in honor of Dr. Verner E. Suomi, widely considered the father of satellite meteorology. In announcing the award recipients. Wilheit was cited for “extraordinary advances in the field of microwave remote sensing, including the development of space borne microwave radiometry and supporting algorithms for rainfall and surface properties.” The award will be presented to Wilheit at the AMS Annual Meeting in January.

Waters to Speak at Professor Emeritus Lecture

Waters’ lecture, titled “The Earliest Texans: Geoarchaeological and Archaeological Investigations of the Gault and Buttermilk Creek Sites,” will explore Waters’ research into the early prehistory of Ice Age Texas. Waters has been conducting research at these two important central Texas sites for the last decade, uncovering evidence that humans may have inhabited the Americas 16,000 years ago – more than 3,000 years earlier than previously thought.
