Geosciences to Offer Nine First-Year Seminars Fall Semester

8/21/09 - Nine seminars in the geosciences will be offered to incoming freshmen this semester through the University’s First-Year Seminar program. These one-credit seminars are open only to first year freshmen. Each will use a learning community setting to focus on a particular research area or topic of current interest.

Quiring Named a Montague Scholar

Dr. Steven Quiring, assistant professor in the Department of Geography in the College of Geosciences, has been named a 2009-2010 Montague Scholar. The Montague-Center for Teaching Excellence Scholar program honors faculty at Texas A&M University for early-career excellence in undergraduate teaching.

Millington Elected to Executive Committee of the U.S. Council of Environmental Deans and Directors

24 July 2009. Andrew Millington, director of Environmental Programs in the College of Geosciences and professor of geography, was elected to a two-year term on the Executive Committee of the U.S. Council of Environmental Deans and Directors at their July 2009 meeting.

Regents Approve Miller as New Dean of Geosciences  

07/17/09 - Kate C. Miller, professor of geophysics and former associate dean of the College of Science at the University of Texas at El Paso, was appointed Dean of the College of Geosciences today (August 17) by the Texas A&M System Board of Regents.

Bednarz Leads Faculty Senate for 2009-2010

05/19/09 - Dr. Robert Bednarz, professor of geography in the College of Geosciences, will lead the Texas A&M University Faculty Senate for 2009-10 as Speaker. He took office at the Senate’s May meeting, succeeding Clint Magill, professor of plant pathology.

Sui Selected for National Academy of Science Mapping Science Committee

05/12/09 - Dr. Daniel Sui, a professor in the Department of Geography and holder of the Reta A. Haynes Endowed Chair in Geosciences, has been selected to serve a three-year term on the Mapping Science Committee (MSC) of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council. Sui will be the first Texas A&M faculty member to serve on the MSC.

College of Geosciences Earns Diversity Grant for iGeo Weekend Program

05/08/09 - The College of Geosciences will play host to the state's top African American and Hispanic students this fall when it launches the Investigate Geosciences, or iGeo, Weekend Program. Designed by Director of Recruitment Dr. Sonia Garcia, the program will bring Texas' top high-achieving junior and senior students to College Station for a whirlwind weekend. During iGeo, participants will meet geosciences faculty and view presentations of college research, labs, and facilities. They will stay in a residence hall with a current geosciences student, tour the Texas A&M campus, meet former students, enjoy a traditional Aggie tailgate, and attend a Fightin' Texas Aggie football game.

Re-Dedication of "JOIDES Resolution"

05/04/09 - Numerous government and scientific leaders will be present at 10 a.m. local time Wednesday (May 6) at Pier 2 in Honolulu Harbor as the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) celebrates the return of the "JOIDES Resolution," one of the world’s premier research vessels, to scientific ocean drilling following its $115 million overhaul. The ship is operated by Texas A&M University for the IODP.
