Geosciences Enrollment, Diversity on the Rise

2/5/10 - An increased number of freshmen, particularly Hispanic and black students, are roaming the halls of the O&M and Halbouty buildings this semester, after the two demographics received intense focus from Dr. Sonia Garcia, Director of Recruitment for the College of Geosciences. The number of Hispanic students enrolled last fall increased by 32%, and the number of black students increased by 50%.

Geography Student Selected for 09/10 Who's Who List

1/20/10 - Jonathan Dobbins, a senior in the Department of Geography, is among those listed in the 2009-2010 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities at Texas A&M University. Dobbins, along with 63 other students selected for the prestigious list, will be formally honored at the All-University Awards Ceremony on Sunday, April 18th.

Geosciences Graduate Students Take Honors at TAMU System Symposium

12/2/2009 - Geography Ph.D. student Danny Redo won first place in his category and was the overall winner among all doctoral student participants at the 7th Annual Texas A&M University System Pathways Student Research Symposium held Nov. 13-14, 2009, at Texas A&M International University (TAMUI) in Laredo. Oceanography master’s student Shaya Seward took first place honors in her category as well.

College of Geosciences Launches iGeo

After months of preparation, the College of Geosciences will finally launch the Investigate Geosciences (iGeo) Fall Weekend Program this Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20-21. The new weekend program will introduce a select group of underrepresented junior and senior students from across Texas to the field of geosciences through a carefully tailored curriculum. During the overnight program, students will attend classes, tour labs, meet with professors, advisors, and students, and experience college life at Texas A&M.

Geosciences Students Share Their Cultures & Experiences

(11/11/09) - The College of Geosciences will host a booth at Brazos Valley Worldfest this Saturday (November 14) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Wolf Pen Creek Amphitheater in College Station. Geography graduate students Ashley Pipkin, Sandra Metoyer, and Nikki Williams are organizing a college display featuring traditional dress, folk music, photographs, maps, keepsakes,  and games representing Colombia, India, Bhutan, Ireland, and other countries from around the world. Geoscience students and faculty from diverse backgrounds or who conduct research in areas around the world will be on hand to share their cultural heritage and world experiences.

Geography Graduate Students Win Top Paper, Poster Awards

11/4/2009 - Three Geography graduate students won top paper and poster awards at the Southwestern Division of the Association of American Geographers (SWAAG) conference in North Little Rock, Arkansas, last week (October 29-31). Twenty-two graduate students and faculty from the department attended the SWAAG conference to view, present, and discuss research from member university geography programs.

Eight Geosciences Faculty, Staff Honored

11/2/2009 - Eight College of Geosciences faculty and staff members were recognized for their achievements Thursday, October 29th, at an annual college reception in the Halbouty Building. Dean Kate Miller presented the 2009 Dean’s Distinguished Achievement Awards. Association of Former Students (AFS) Director of Campus Programs Kelli Hutka, ’97, assisted in presenting the 2009 AFS College Level Teaching Awards.

UCLA Professor to Give 2009 Haynes Lecture

11/2/2009 - UCLA Geography Professor Glen MacDonald will present the Texas A&M University Department of Geography’s 2009 Haynes Lecture at 4:00 pm on November 6th in room 208 of Scoates Hall. MacDonald holds a University of California presidential chair and is director of the UCLA Institute of the Environment.

Geosciences Researchers Receive $3.3 Million from Federal Stimulus

10/26/2009 - Researchers from all four of the College of Geosciences’ academic departments received funds from the National Science Foundation (NSF), through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), a stimulus package passed earlier this year to reinvigorate the U.S. economy.
