Roark’s Work Reveals Surprises about Deep Sea Corals and their Past

Using radiocarbon dating and samples of coral collected from the ocean floor by the submersible vehicles of the Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory, the researchers from Stanford and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have found that Gerardia, known as gold coral, can live for at least 2,700 years. It grows in tree-like fashion to several meters in height. Even older is the deep-water black coral Leiopathes glaberrima. Another tree-like skeleton, it has life spans in excess of 4000 years.

National Wildlife Features Heyman’s Work in Belize

Working under The Nature Conservancy, Heyman was sent to Belize in 1994 to collaborate with local fishermen and other stakeholders to create a marine protected area. While there, local fishermen helped him to understand that Gladden Spit, a reef off the coast of southern Belize, hosted multispecies spawning aggregations (SPAGs) that were a major draw for whale sharks to feed. By identifying the habits and likely location of the whale sharks, Heyman and Graham helped foster the development of an estimated $3.7 million tourist industry for the area.

Geography Department Offers Study Abroad Opportunity

The Brazil Environment and Geography program this year will begin in Salvador, a major urban center in Brazil known for its sugarcane production. Students will then travel to the former diamond-mining region, Lençóis, where ecotourism has replaced mining as the main economic activity. From Lençóis, the students will travel to Juazeiro, a leading center of production of fresh fruit exports, and the surrounding poor regions. The program will conclude with a visit to Barreiras, one of Brazil’s leading areas of frontier agriculture, where students will tour the region’s farms, native savanna vegetation, and rivers.
